Thumbs up for bristol flooring firm

Leading Bristol flooring contractor Rudge Brothers and James (RBJ) has received a pat on the back for its part in the £12 million revamp of the city's Arnolfini contemporary arts space.

St Philip's-based RBJ laid down special hard-wearing slip resistant Altro Stronghold 30 flooring in the kitchen basement and upstairs bar of the waterfront gallery which has now reopened following the facelift.

As part of the contract the walls of the kitchen and food preparation areas have been clad in Altro's Whiterock, an easy clean, low maintenance hygienic PVC wall cladding. The unique Altro Whiterock fitting means fully-sealed joints (even round corners and window openings having been thermoformed on site) which leaves no gaps or spaces for germs and bacteria to set up camp and is fully bonded to the wall with an epoxy adhesive.

Arnolfini general manager Tom Moran said he was delighted with the work and is looking forward to working with RBJ again in the future. In addition to all the goings on of a normal basement kitchen all our beer barrels have to be rolled across this area to reach the cold cellar. The area has held up to all of this bashing and I must admit looks in as good a job as it did when it was fitted. I am delighted at how well it has all held together."

RBJ director Jim Heal said he was pleased to have played a part in the refurbishment of one of the country's foremost art venues.

"Buildings like the Arnolfini get an awful lot of wear and tear, most especially in the kitchen and bar areas, so you really need a high performance floor and wall covering to keep the areas in pristine condition and are easy to clean and maintain."

In the last 40 years, Arnolfini has established itself as one of Europe's leading centres for contemporary arts. The centre, which houses exhibitions alongside dance, film and performance, was chosen by Sir Paul McCartney for an exhibition of his work in 2000.

Rudge Brothers and James, based at Stanhope House, Victoria Road, have been trading for almost 40 years and specialises in all types floor coverings with clients including restaurants, hotels, schools and hospitals.
